Start with your next journey

01

Choose where to go

Open Plan. Search for your starting point and destination, then choose a matching result.

02

Find your route

Check the time and preferences. Open a journey to see its walking and transport legs.

03

Set off

Start the journey when you are ready. Keep station signs and staff instructions in view as you travel.

Get help with City Travel

For a problem with the app, a feature suggestion or a city request, open Settings → Feedback. Include the stop or station name, what you were trying to do and what happened. If you want a reply, you can add an email address.

The in-app form confirms when feedback has been received. Keep its reference if you need to follow up.

City Travel is independent of TfL. For Oyster, contactless payments, ticket refunds, lost property or a complaint about a transport service, use TfL's help and contact pages.

Location and journey guidance

My location is missing or in the wrong place

Check that Location Services are enabled on your iPhone and that City Travel has permission to use your location. If a precise fix is unavailable, choose a starting stop or search another area.

Signals can be weak underground and between tall buildings. When the app reports an old or unavailable position, use station signs and the saved journey steps until location returns.

Why does location continue when I lock my phone?

During a journey you have started, location can continue to update your progress while the screen is locked. End the active journey when you finish. Ordinary browsing does not keep location updates running in the background.

Can I plan without location access?

Yes. Search for your starting stop and destination, choose the matching results, then plan your journey. Nearby results can use an area you choose.

The suggested route does not fit my journey

Check the starting point, destination, departure or arrival time, transport modes and journey filters. Try a more specific station or a different time. Route options depend on what TfL returns for those choices.

Departures, disruptions and cycle docks

A departure time is old or keeps changing

Arrival times are predictions from the transport feed. Check the freshness message, refresh when you have a connection and use station or stop displays for the latest local information. An expired result should not be treated as a current prediction.

No journeys or departures are shown

Check your connection and the selected stop. Some stops or services may have no current predictions, and an upstream service can be temporarily unavailable. Try again shortly or check TfL's website.

Why is a cycle dock different when I arrive?

Bike and dock counts can change after a result is fetched. The nearby list is a snapshot of TfL's feed. Check the physical docking station before relying on a bike or space being available.

Does the app know my exact fare or card balance?

No. City Travel has no access to your Oyster or contactless account. A fare estimate shown with a journey is not your personal charge or a guaranteed quote. Check TfL's fares information for caps, discounts and ticket rules.

Siri and walking directions

How do I use City Travel with Siri?

On iOS 16 or later, open Apple's Shortcuts app and look for City Travel's App Shortcuts. They can open journey planning, check a saved stop's departures and check line status. Save a stop in City Travel first to make it available to the saved-stop shortcut.

Check that Siri is enabled and available in your language. Live answers need a connection. If a shortcut has no current answer, open City Travel and check the relevant stop or line.

How do spoken walking directions work?

Start a journey with a walking leg and use the spoken-directions control in the active journey. The app reads walking instructions aloud; it does not record your microphone. Check your volume and connected audio device if you cannot hear it.

Location must be recent and accurate enough to follow the route. You can mute instructions or end the journey at any time. Use crossings, signs and your surroundings when deciding where it is safe to walk.

What happens if the app closes during my journey?

The app can offer to plan again using a destination and preferences saved on your phone. It requests a fresh route instead of assuming you are still on the old one. The offer is available for up to 12 hours and does not automatically restart tracking.

Notifications and Live Activities

Background alerts are not arriving
  1. Open the app's Settings → Notifications.
  2. Choose the lines you want and turn on Background alerts.
  3. Check that the app says the connection is established. If it is still connecting, keep the app open with an internet connection and retry.
  4. Check iPhone notification permissions and Focus or notification-summary settings.
  5. Use Send test alert when it is available in the app.

Alerts follow changes in TfL's service status. Delivery can be delayed by the network, Apple notification delivery or your iPhone settings. Turning on a line does not mean a new disruption message will arrive immediately.

How do I turn alerts off?

Turn off Background alerts in the app's Notifications settings. If the app says the change is still pending, reopen it with a connection so cancellation can finish. You can also turn off notification display in iPhone Settings.

For what is removed from the service and what remains, read notification data retention.

My Live Activity has stopped updating

A Live Activity shows the active trip on supported iPhones. It is updated by the app when iOS gives it time to run. If the location or arrival estimate has become old, open the app to refresh and check the journey.

Check that Live Activities are allowed for City Travel in iPhone Settings. Ending the journey removes its Live Activity.

Home Screen widgets

The widget is showing an earlier area

Widgets use the last nearby or selected area shared by the app. Open City Travel, let the nearby stops load or choose a new area, then return to the Home Screen. The widget does not continuously follow your precise location.

The widget has not refreshed yet

iOS controls when widgets get time to refresh. Check the displayed update or freshness information and open the app for a current view. A Home Screen widget may update less frequently than an open app.

Saved stops, appearance and reset

Can I watch the introduction again?

Yes. Open Settings and use the introduction video option. You can skip it at any time. The first-launch video does not play every time you reopen the app.

Where are my favourites saved?

Favourite stops are saved on your device. Open Settings → Favourites to manage them. This version has no account-based sync between devices.

Can I reduce motion or change the appearance?

Open Settings to choose the app's appearance and adjust Reduce motion and Reduce transparency. These choices are saved on your phone.

What does Reset app clear?

Reset app clears saved stops and app preferences, ends the active journey and opens the welcome screens again. It also requests notification cleanup. Already-submitted feedback stays in the service unless it is separately deleted.

If notification cleanup is pending, keep the app installed and reopen it with a connection. See clearing your data for the full distinction.

Help us understand a problem

A useful report includes:

  • The stop or station and the relevant line, if applicable.
  • The approximate date and time of the problem.
  • The screen you were using and the steps that led to it.
  • What you expected and what the app showed instead.

The in-app form includes the app version and platform when available. You do not need to include your home address, full travel history, payment-card details or notification credentials.
